How to fix: SharePoint Online won’t open documents or attachments in client applications (eg in Word or Excel on the desktop)

This is a frustrating problem

There are two steps

Step 1. Enable the “Open Documents in Client Applications by Default ” service – see steps here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2859986

Step 2. Check the Library Settings –> Advanced Settings–> Opening documents in browser is set to “Use the server default (Open in the client application)”

SharePoint Tip: Setting Outlook Reminders on SharePoint Calendars

I have been asked the question of how to do this a few times. Finally got five minutes to research it.

The answer is quite clever and simple. It can be done using standard SharePoint and Outlook features.

Overview

  1. Create a view showing items in the calendar with a start time of Today
  2. Connect to the RSS feed from the SharePoint view using Outlook
  3. Use rules and alerts in Outlook, to set up an Alert on new items in the RSS feed

Steps in Detail

There are two good articles that outline the process in detail

Good Luck

If you have this problem, you may have just upgraded to IE10.

Amanda Palmer on Asking

I am recommending this TED talk for two reasons (i) Amanda presents an alternative to conventional business models and (ii) It is just a really effective presentation.

I will be recommend  this and the Amy Cuddy TED talk as examples of effective presentations in my PowerPoint courses – any of the TED talks are worth studying to improve presentation technique beyond PowerPoint.

I know every business presentation can’t be like this – but why not just a little bit?

Windows 8 itself

Running Windows 8 on a PC or virtual machine will help and its not too hard to set up. I have been working through the book below over the last couple of days, and it is invaluable to be able to jump out into Windows to try a feature when you get to it in the book.

Books

There is a growing range of Windows 8 books available, via Safari Books Online I have been using and recommend  Paul Thurrott and Rafael Riviera’s Windows 8 Secrets. (John Wiley & Sons)
