PowerPivot for Excel 2010 and SharePoint 2010

On Friday, I was catching up on my podcasts and listing to Hilton Giesenow‘s The MOSS Show and in Episode 34 Hilton interviews Pej Javaheri from the SharePoint B.I. team at Microsoft about Business Intelligence and SharePoint.

What got my attention was  PowerPivot which is an add-in for Excel or SharePoint that allows you to connect to large tables of data to do pivot table analysis.

Quick Review

I have downloaded the PowerPivot for Excel plugin. I have tried with Excel 2010 and SQL server 2008 R2 using some data I have for development.

You choose the source, in this case it was easy to choose From Database, From SQL  server and connect to the SQL server database.

The Design tab of the PowerPivot window will allow you relate the tables together easily. I can’t show you the result because I used some old but real data.

If you have used Pivot tables in Excel 2010 you will very quickly recognise the Pivot table tools.

Who needs this

You if you are  doing data mining across different sources of data within the organisation (and not just within – see the Windows Azure Data Market )


If your data is too large (more than one million, forty eight thousand rows) and can’t fit in an Excel Spreadsheet.
